All bar Brendan Wade had previously been in a punk band called Black Arthur & the Undertakers.

Cry Before Dawn is a four-piece rock band from Wexford, Ireland. They blended Celtic rock with a powerful, anthemic sound. The band originally gained attention in the late 1980s with their album Crimes of Conscience, featuring singles like Gone Forever and The Seed That’s Been Sown. They later released Witness for the World in 1989, but despite critical acclaim, their success in the UK was limited.

Cooleycall Studio

In their early career Cry Before Dawn were guided by Pirate Radio DJ and former Roach Band drummer Alan McGurie. In March 1983 they recorded a 3 track demo at the Cooleycall Studio. In the local press the demo is described as ” A little raw, it shows a fair modicum of promise with the best track being Boarderline.”

Ivy Rooms Dublin

In September ’83 Cry Before Dawn are one of 3 Wexford band that are invited to Dublin to play the Ivy Rooms. The other two are Yellow Mariah & Electron.

Fanning Session

The band record at least one Fanning Session (July 1984). In December 1984 they release their debut single on their own record label. “Follow Me”/”Credit To The People (Pain Of Life”) Dawn Records. It was recorded at Cooleycall studio. It features both Eamonn Murphy & Mick Odlum on keyboards. Both tracks were written & produced by the band.
Brendan Wade played Uileann pipes & whistle on Zerra 1 debut album.
Vinie Doyle had formerly played with another Wexford band Out Of Uniform.
Brendan formerly played in a Trad band called Sonas
Pat Hayes & Tony Hall were formerly with Black Arthur & The Undertakers. Pat also wrote songs for the Bantu Bottle Company & Kyron.

Janice Long

In 1985 Cry Before Dawn play an open air festival for the New Ross Youth Service along with other local bands The Village, Purple Haze, Defined Pose, The Flat Tops, The Klowns, The 3rd Mind & Backdoor Blues.

T.V. appearances


Appearing on TV’s Gaga show in 1986. Visual Eyes a new pop music programme hosted by Dave Fanning. They also appeared on the Late Late Show

Dreamers & Corner Boys

Dreamers & Corner Boys was a charity cassette featuring Wexford bands from 1978 – 1989. The bands were Zerra 1, Black Arthur & the Undertakers, Cry Before Dawn, The Roache Band, Pierce Turner, Prime Suspect, The Vision, The Beatless, Elekton, Overdrive, Bantu Bottle Company, Twlight Dreamers, Local contact, Darchadas, Black 47, Hi Output, The Third Mind, The Ensemble.
