Ninety percent of The Outfits set is original material, written by Ger Costello. The rest of their set consisted of obscure Jamaican Ska covers. They listed their influences as Linton Kwesi, UB40, Max Romeo & the Doors. Rather than trying to be reggae purists, The Outfit adapt this musical medium to reflect their own circumstances. While they express their views strongly through their music, they made it clear that they are not a political band.

Demo Recording

The Outfit recorded a demo tape at the Middle Eight Studios in Limerick and Reforms guitarist Willie Browne was the production desk. They were managed by Hayman Harris, brother of film star Richard.
They played the Baggot Inn, Dublin and cut a record with CBS Records in London August ’82, and then toured Holland in September ’82.

The Outfits Scoff Records Singles

The Outfit released their first single on Scoff Records on 01/10/1982 called El Salvador/Radiation DT019. Written by Ger Costello.
El Salvador is a slow number in a reggae style, with meaningful & profound lyrics and forms a vinyl protest at the atrocities being committed in that country. The music is positive without being pretentious in thinking that they can change society.

They went back into the studio to record their second single on Scoff in August ’83. Toytown/A Sharp DT024. Again it was written by Ger Costello

The Outfit on Non Stop Pop

Reaction to El Salvador the song is so good from the public that The Outfit perform it on RTE’s Non Stop Pop. And by the time that El Salvador is recorded, Mike Ryan has moved from guitar to keyboards and so Paul Healy, brother of Brian joins the band on lead guitar.

Dermot Moloney had previously been in another Limerick band Christy & The Last of the Teenage Hero’s.
