Ingmar & Johnny had previously been in the New Versions & Sordid Details. They also ran Dublin’s first “Punk” disco. While Marian was a former member of the Soulmates, Conor came from Howth bands Sounds Unreel & Deaf Actor.
Max were originally a trio using a drum machine, Johnny later took over on drums. In 1983 Max were voted the best unrecorded act in the Stag/Hot Press awards. The prize for this was a contribution (£750) towards recording a debut single. The award was presented to the band by Phil Lynott on Ireland’s top rated TV show, The Late Late Show. The band perform East To West on the show and were signed by CBS Records. Although CBS Records are known to have recorded the track, it was never released as a single. Ingmar left the band in 1983 and moved to London. The band carried on without him for a short while before folding.
