28/05/1980 Trinity Hall, Bristol, England. U2 11 o’clock Tick Tock Leg 2.
U2’s dates in Ireland with the Myster Men, I’m calling Leg 1. I have grouped together a bunch of dates and called it Leg 2.These dates include U2’s English dates on the 11 o’clock Tick Tock tour. Plus the festival dates they played in Ireland after the tour. Also included is an extra date they played at the Marquee in London with The Photo’s.
On the original tour dates 22/05/80 Hope & Anchor – 07/06/80 Half Moon Club, Fashion were the support group used by U2. Fashion were given the “Headline” slot on the Birmingham date, as this is their home town. On the dates added in July for their London concerts. Medium Medium & Midnight & The Lemon Boys were the support bands used. The concert at the Half Moon Club, Herne Hill, became U2’s first sell out UK gig.
28/05/1980 Trinity Hall, Bristol, England
In hindsight a 1980 gig was particularly memorable for a little known but much feted band, U2 which graced the stage. Post rock Bristol stalwarts recalled feeling rather underwhelmed by the performance of the young pretenders. As one member suggested; “You didn’t think you were looking at a group that was gonna be the biggest group in the world in a year.” Quote taken from the Trinity Hall website.
This venue is actually a church hall, back in the day many top bands played this venue including Joy Division and the Specials.
Information on U2’s 11 O’clock Tick Tock is hard to come by. The New Musical Express & Sounds British music press were both on strike during May 1980. So no issues of the weekly magazines were published.
