Summer Festivals ’82

U2 return from their tour of the states, to play some of Europe’s biggest summer festivals. The concert at ‘T Heem is recorded by Dutch television. The show is broadcast on July 7th. The Gateshead Stadium show is filmed by “The Tube”. A ITV rock music show recorded just down the road in Newcastle. Long time friend & supporter of the band Paula Yates was the co presenter of the show.

I Will Follow “live”

Island Records release a single in Holland & Germany. They use the live recording of “I Will Follow” from this concert and couple it with “Gloria” as the “B” side. The single reaches number 12 in the local charts. It’s now a very collectable single for U2 fans.

These two shows are where Bono first uses the iconic U2 white flag. It’s also the first time he starts too climb the stage rigging, so crowd at the back can see.

Let’s Twist Again

U2 play a free rooftop concert at a community centre on Sheriff Street as part of a festival called Inner City Looking On. Some crowd members managed to climb onto the rooftop to join U2. Before An Cat Dubh, a large drunk man confronted Bono and insisted he perform Let’s Twist Again. Bono did so a cappella, with the crowd filling in the lyrics he did not know. Photos indicate this gig was a pretty cramped affair; Edge is seen playing his black Fender Stratocaster. He did not use his Gibson Explorer at all during this concert.
