Unlike most Dublin bands, The Muff Divers started life playing gigs outside the capital.
23/12/1979 McGonagle’s, Dublin Liam Mackey Hot Press. New Faces the Muff Divers are playing their second Dublin date, city boys who have served their apprenticeship throughout the country. The sound is crystal clear. Intelligent heavy metal pop, beaty and concise. A five piece, solid but subtle drumming, a bass, guitars, a guitar hero! Al Richardson, comes complete with ridiculous macho guitar poses and unusually woven guitar patterns.

A Star is Born

A star is born. The Muff Divers ace vocalist and frontman Tyke. He cuts a ridiculous figure in tights and dressing gown, parading the stage, an intimate clown playing audience dynamics. He is a welcome addition to the Irish scene, carrying attention and interest, whether playing the part of a pusher in the insidious “Drop Another” (“Hey Kid! Ya wanna score?” he whispers, handing out Smarties) or deflating the other members poses (“Ladeez n’ Gentlemen, Al Richardson, guitar hero, Al Richardson, Ladeez n’ Gentlemen, AL RICHARDSON!”)

It’s All In The Name

The Muff Divers major drawback is their inane and schoolboyish sexist posturing, designed to cause outrage but succeeding only in casting them as fools; it does not feature in the songs, so why the emphasis on the dirty mac brigade? Is there life beyond adolescence? Tomorrow knows.

During the first three months of 1980 the Muff Divers had residencies at the Magnet Bar, McGonagle’s and the Crofton Airport Hotel.
