Against The Grain
Drogheda 1981 - ?
Eugene Byrne Guitar & vocals
Milish Milne Drums
Flan Flanagan Bass
Joey Mahers with the Major Thinkers
Drogheda band Against The Grain played their first support slot and didn’t impress too many people. No rapturous applause, no banging of bottles on tables or shouting for more. Rather sighs of relief and wiping of brows. A lot of people visited the Gentlemen’s convenience and never came back.
Against the Grain had a bad night and so had the majority of the audience. A terrible sound mix and constant feed back were the main faults. I like their songs, even if they do tend to sound like P.I.L. retreads at times, and while some would think their lyrics clichéd they have a social awareness and honesty about them that pulls those clichés apart. As I said, a bad gig. They and I know that they can do better. So do better OK? Hot Press review by Tony Clayton Lea.
